The transport system in Oman is organized and advanced, to say the least. You can easily get around using public transportation or while driving your own car. Nonetheless, everyone, including drivers and commuters, must be aware of the country’s traffic laws.

Below is a list of the specific traffic violations and fines in Oman, including laws on speeding, parking, overtaking, hauling/transporting, and various other violations.

Aside from the fine itself, most of these violations involve “black points,” a system that has been implemented since March 2018. When a person accumulates more than 12 black points in a year, he/she may lose his/her driving license.

Speeding Violations

  • Exceeding maximum speed by more than 75 km/hr – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Exceeding maximum speed by more than 50-75 km/hr – 35 OMR, 2 black points
  • Exceeding maximum speed by more than 35 km/hr – 10 OMR
  • Driving at a speed that disrupts traffic – 35 OMR, 1 black point

Parking Violations

  • Parking in a space designated for the disabled – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Parking on the yellow line on the left side of the road – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Parking a truck less than 50 meters between the yellow line on the right and the main road, when there’s no emergency – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Parking in a space designated for ambulances – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Parking on the yellow line on the right, when there’s no emergency – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Parking a car for sale in places other than those designated for display or sale – 35 OMR
  • Parking on a designated footpath – 15 OMR
  • Parking on a part of the road – 10 OMR

Overtaking Violations

  • Overtaking on the yellow line or on the island – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Overtaking by heavy vehicles or trucks on roads that do not permit overtaking – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Overtaking dangerously by trucks or buses – 35 OMR, 2 black points
  • Overtaking by trucks or buses on non-main roads – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Overtaking in the path of deceleration, acceleration, and pedestrian ramps – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving on the yellow line continuously, with the intent to overtake another vehicle – 10 OMR, 1 black point

Hauling or Transporting Violations

  • Hauling or transporting another vehicle on a public road in a way that poses a threat to other motorists – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Hauling or transporting a vehicle by another vehicle that is smaller in size and engine power – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Commercial transportation on a vehicle that is carrying temporary registration plates – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Transporting passengers in a vehicle or a motorbike with a teaching plate – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Transporting passengers that exceeds the number prescribed for buses – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Transporting passengers over the limit specified in the vehicle’s license – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Carrying passengers inside a cargo box – 10 OMR, 1 black point

Other Violations

  • Driving a vehicle with a license from another category – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Installation of additional equipment that increases the engine’s power or sound output – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Covering the entire face beyond the recognition of the driver – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Not stopping at a checkpoint – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Drifting – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Misrepresentation of vehicle panel data, or covering the panel/part of the panel – 50 OMR, 3 black points
  • Driving a car with a license that has been canceled or withdrawn – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Driving a vehicle or a bike with limited use other than in designated places – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Driving a foreign car with temporary registration after the end of the prescribed period – 50 OMR
  • Violations of renting offices or showrooms for selling vehicles – 50 OMR
  • Installing stickers or additions to the vehicle without permission – 50 OMR
  • Adding or changing fuel tanks other than factory specifications – 50 OMR
  • Opening outlets on the road without approval from the administration – 50 OMR
  • Following ambulances on roads – 35 OMR, 2 black points
  • Driving a motorbike without wearing a helmet (driver and/or passenger) – 35 OMR, 2 black points

  • Not stopping for a police officer – 35 OMR, 1 black points
  • Driving with export or import plates after the expiry of the prescribed period – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Stopping the vehicle on the side of the road in a position that endangers its users – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving heavy vehicles at a time when it is prohibited – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Not installing the vehicle license plate in its designated location clearly – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving a foreign car other than for tourism, passing through, or visits – 35 OMR
  • Repair of a vehicle that has been seriously damaged, without prior consent from the police – 35 OMR
  • Using mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving – 15 OMR, 2 black points
  • Failure to adhere to the correct path at the traffic lights – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Not adding reflecting markings on heavy vehicles and equipment – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Not turning on the light alarm for trucks and accompanying vehicles – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Installing a tool or device to place the mobile phone or other electronic devices for the driver’s use – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Installing a box on the motorbike without permission – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Abandoning a vehicle on either side of the road – 15 OMR
  • Not installing a warning light on the dashboard of trucks/trailers, or not repairing it – 15 OMR
  • Not using the correct safety belt for drivers and passengers – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Raising the volume of the sound system, radio, or any recording on the road – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving a delivery motorbike on the main road – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving the vehicle on a road that is closed or under construction – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Not using children’s car seats for children below 4 years old – 10 OMR, 1 black point
  • Distraction with non-driving activities (e.g. reading, tampering with vehicle equipment) – 10 OMR
  • Using headlights at high beam in a way that endangers other drivers – 10 OMR
  • Driving a vehicle without its main lights on a road that is lit – 10 OMR
  • Driving a bicycle without wearing a helmet (driver and/or passenger) – 10 OMR

Rules on Driving Instruction

In addition to the above violations, there are rules related to driving instruction as well. The following violations and fines apply specifically to driving instructors and student drivers:

  • Teaching in a vehicle in an unauthorized category – 50 OMR, 2 black points
  • Driving a learner vehicle without a permit – 35 OMR, 2 black points
  • Driving instructor is teaching with an expired permit – 35 OMR, 2 black points
  • Learning to drive a car without an instructor – 35 OMR
  • Training to drive a vehicle without a driving instructor’s license – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving instructor is occupied with something other than teaching – 35 OMR, 1 black point
  • Driving instructor uses a mobile phone or any electronic device during a lesson – 15 OMR, 2 black points
  • Tinting or coloring the car windows of the driving instructor car / taxi – 15 OMR, 1 black point
  • Not wearing a formal Omani dress (for driving instructors) – 10 OMR, 1 black point
